Plan a Night Safari with kids from lights-out backwards, not from opening time. Mandai’s walking trails and tram start at 7pm, so if getting home and winding down take 70 minutes (our assumption), a child due in bed at 7.30pm would have to leave before the trails, tram or shows begin, while one who can stay up until about 10pm has room for a fire show, a tram ride and a booked animal show. The Mandai pages we read on 17 October 2026 state no minimum age; whether the dark and the animals suit your child is your call.

Ticket costs and the other parks are in our Mandai guide; for an indoor daytime option at the same reserve, see our Exploria or Curiosity Cove guide.

At a glance

  • Hours: the Night Safari page says daily 6pm–12am, last entry 11.15pm, and that all guests and members must select a time slot. The itinerary page says opening is 6.30pm, so check when you book.
  • Tram: first departure 7pm, last 11.20pm, about 30 minutes a ride “subject to crowd levels and conditions” (Know Before You Go); complimentary (trams and rides page).
  • Shows: Embers of Night at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm, no booking; Creatures of the Night at 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm, booked seat required. Mandai says each lasts 10 to 20 minutes (presentations page).
  • Stroller and dinner: Mandai’s rental stroller takes one child up to 15kg; any stroller must be folded for the tram (services FAQ). Mandai recommends dinner before you enter.
  • Dated notices: on 17 October 2026 the park page said the Fishing Cat exhibit in Pangolin Trail is closed from 7 October to 31 December 2026 for refurbishment, and carried a haze notice pointing to haze.gov.sg. An evening of trails is outdoor activity, so check the haze readings on the day; our haze guide for outdoor plans explains which reading to use.

Can toddlers and preschoolers go to Night Safari?

The pages we read state no minimum age, and under-3s enter free with a ticketed adult above 21 (ticket page). Know Before You Go asks that children be supervised “at all times”, and the Parks Rules and Conditions make you responsible for your child’s safety. Neither says whether the dark or the animals suit a young child: that judgement is yours, and nothing here is a safety assurance. Three details matter for a toddler:

  • Book a show seat for a toddler too. The FAQ on the Creatures of the Night page asks “Do I need to book seats for my baby/infant/toddler/child?” and answers “Yes, as they are considered as 1 headcount.”
  • Bats overhead. The Leopard Trail page says flying foxes may fly past just inches above your head.
  • A sensory map exists. Mandai’s accessibility FAQ says sensory maps show enclosed spaces with free-ranging animals, quiet zones and strong sensory inputs. We suggest checking it if your child is wary of the dark.

How do you plan Night Safari backwards from bedtime?

Take lights-out and subtract the journey home and your wind-down (bath, teeth, a story): the result is the time you must be out of the gate. The formula, plan and checkpoints below are our suggestion, not Mandai’s, and we give no sleep or health advice.

Exit time = lights-out − journey home − wind-down

Our placeholders are 40 minutes door to door (Mandai says the reserve is about a 30-minute drive from the city; we added ten) and 30 minutes of wind-down: 70 minutes in all. Use your own numbers, then match each exit time to Mandai’s programme:

  • Lights-out 7.30pm, exit by 6.20pm: the trails, tram and shows have not started. This does not work.
  • Lights-out 8.30pm, exit by 7.20pm: the 7pm Embers of Night only just fits (a 10 to 20 minute show ends by 7.20pm); a tram ride, about 30 minutes from 7pm, does not.
  • Lights-out 9.10pm, exit by 8pm: Embers of Night and one tram ride.
  • Lights-out 10.10pm, exit by 9pm: adds a booked Creatures of the Night seat at 8.30pm. This is the plan below.

A child whose usual lights-out is 8pm would go to bed two hours ten minutes later on the 9pm exit (10.10pm minus 8pm); whether that works is for you to judge. We suggest a night before a free morning.

What does a Night Safari evening look like with a 10pm lights-out?

Our plan runs 2.5 hours, 6.30pm to 9pm; Mandai’s itinerary page estimates 3 hours for its own highlights. It is illustrative: the times come from Mandai’s schedule, nobody has walked it, and the pages give no walking times between stops.

  • Dinner first, about 5.30pm to 6.15pm. Mandai lists Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant from 5.30pm on the itinerary page but from 6pm on the dining page; neither says which side of the entry gate it is on. If it opens at 6pm that window shrinks, and the dining page lists Mandai Wildlife EAST outlets open until 9pm or later, such as Food Republic (8am–9pm).
  • 6.30pm, at the entrance. Rent a stroller at the ticketing counter outside the entrance if needed. With your ticket and time slot, booking for the 8.30pm Creatures of the Night seat opens at 6.30pm, two hours before (our arithmetic). Book for every child; seats are limited, and Mandai asks you not to book earlier than your admission time.
  • 7pm, Embers of Night at the Entrance Courtyard. If your child is wary of fire, stand back (our suggestion).
  • About 7.20pm, tram from Station 1. Rides vary with crowds, so we allow until 8pm. Ride while your child is awake, as the stroller must be folded (our suggestion).
  • 8pm to 8.15pm, toilet, water, walk. Start no trail: Mandai’s treks and trails page marks all four Night Safari trails “Easy” but gives no lengths.
  • 8.15pm, seated. Mandai asks everyone to be on site 15 minutes before; gates close 10 minutes before, and arriving after the show has begun counts as a no-show.
  • 8.30pm, Creatures of the Night, 10 to 20 minutes.
  • By 9pm, out of the gate. Home about 9.40pm, lights-out about 10.10pm.

What if your child tires or falls asleep?

Agree these stops before you leave home.

  • Checkpoint 1, about 8pm, after the tram. If your child is past enjoying it, go; an 8pm exit means lights-out about 9.10pm.
  • Checkpoint 2, 8.15pm, at the Amphitheatre. If your child is asleep or fretful, skip the show and walk out.
  • Cancel the seat either way. Mandai asks guests to cancel via the SMS or email confirmation and says a no-show is void and cannot be reused. Its FAQ also says “Tickets are only valid on the stated date and time, and are non-refundable and non-exchangeable”, without making clear whether that covers admission, seats or both.
  • Rain or lightning. Mandai suggests the tram or shelter in a stall or the gift shop in heavy rain, and going indoors immediately in lightning. For a swap decided at home, see our Plan B guide.

What does parking cost, and how do you get home?

Mandai’s getting-here page lists car parking at S$3 for the first hour, then S$2 for each further hour or part, up to S$10 an entry. Parking from about 5.30pm to 9.15pm is 3 hours 45 minutes, so S$3 plus 3 × S$2 is S$9 (our illustration). The M2 bus from Khatib MRT costs S$2.50 for adults and children aged 7 to 12 and is free below 7, but the page text gives the last bus from Khatib MRT (11.40pm) and no return times, so check them before relying on it. Hired taxis leaving the reserve carry a S$5 surcharge from 1pm to 11.59pm, including app-booked taxis but not private hire cars (taxi surcharge FAQ).

What to check before you go

  • Your lights-out target, journey and wind-down, and the exit time that follows.
  • The day’s hours, time slots (6pm or 6.30pm), show times and any park-page notices, including the haze notice and the Fishing Cat closure on Pangolin Trail.
  • A Creatures of the Night seat for every child, booked from 2 hours before.
  • Your child’s weight against the 15kg rental-stroller limit, or a plan to carry. With a stroller, the Parks Rules say to use the lifts, not the escalators.
  • Water, insect repellent and comfortable shoes (Mandai’s suggestions). The Parks Rules ban flash photography and flashlights, so on our reading leave a toy torch at home.
  • Both checkpoints agreed, and a fallback from our days out ideas.
