How do I work out a PSLE score from subject marks?

Turn each subject’s percentage score into an Achievement Level (AL), then add the four ALs. MOE’s PSLE scoring system page gives eight bands, from AL1 at 90% and above and AL2 at 85–89% down to AL7 at 20–44% and AL8 below 20%. The PSLE score is the total of the ALs in English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue, from 4 (best) to 32; MOE’s example, AL3, AL2, AL1 and AL2, is 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 8. The tool’s convention is whole-number percentages, because MOE’s table does not say where 84.5 would fall.

For S1 posting, MOE counts Foundation A (75–100%) as AL6, B (30–74%) as AL7 and C (below 30%) as AL8, so a Foundation subject still adds 6 to 8 to the total. Our illustration, a fictional child, not a prediction: English 52% is AL6, Mathematics 38% is AL7, Foundation Science 55% is grade B, counted as AL7, and Mother Tongue 50% is AL6. The total is 6 + 7 + 7 + 6 = 26.

Which Posting Group does a PSLE score give?

MOE’s posting groups page maps the score to a Posting Group and an indicative level at the start of Secondary 1:

  • 4–20: Posting Group 3 (G3)
  • 21 and 22: Posting Group 2 or 3 (G2 or G3)
  • 23 and 24: Posting Group 2 (G2)
  • 25: Posting Group 1 or 2 (G1 or G2)
  • 26–30, with AL7 or better in English Language and Mathematics: Posting Group 1 (G1)

Our fictional child’s 26 is on the last line; English (AL6) and Mathematics (AL7) meet the condition, so the table gives Posting Group 1. Where two groups are listed, MOE’s school-choices page says the student indicates one in the S1 Portal. Our reading: “AL7 or better” means AL7 or a lower number.

The table has no row for 31 or 32, or for 26 to 30 without AL7 or better in both English Language and Mathematics. MOE’s score-calculator page has a message for those results: students who do not qualify for Posting Group 1, 2 or 3 “would have to repeat the PSLE, or progress to NorthLight School or Assumption Pathway School”. The tool quotes it and shows no group; it is MOE’s wording, not a forecast. No sentence on the pages we read says how Foundation English or Mathematics counts for the AL7 condition, so the tool answers “MOE’s page does not say; ask MOE or the school”. MOE’s calculator script counts Foundation A, B and C as 6, 7 and 8 there; the tool notes this but does not rely on it.

Can my child take Higher Mother Tongue?

MOE’s criterion is a PSLE Mother Tongue score of AL1 or AL2, or an HMTL score of Distinction or Merit (80–100 and 65–79 on MOE’s score calculator page); schools may also allow a student assessed to have exceptional ability. More in our guide to PSLE Achievement Levels and Posting Groups.

When are the PSLE results out?

MOE’s examinations dates page says the results will be released tentatively on 24 or 25 November 2026, and its S1 posting page marks that and the S1 posting results (18 December 2026) as tentative. Recheck before 24 November. See our results timeline and DSA-Sec guide.

What does this calculator not do?

It does not predict a school and uses no cut-off points: MOE says SchoolFinder’s score ranges are a reference based on the previous cohort, shifts of +/- 1 are typical and +/- 2 or 3 possible, and meeting them does not guarantee admission. It also leaves out Mother Tongue exemption (MOE assigns a score between AL6 and AL8), third-language eligibility and the Higher Chinese posting advantage.

What marks do I need for AL1 in the PSLE?

MOE’s table puts AL1 at a subject score of 90% or above, and AL2 at 85–89%.

Which Posting Group is a PSLE score of 21?

MOE’s table says Posting Group 2 or 3; the student chooses in the S1 Portal.

Does a PSLE score of 31 or 32 have a Posting Group?

MOE’s table stops at 30. Its score-calculator page says students who do not qualify for Posting Group 1, 2 or 3 would have to repeat the PSLE, or progress to NorthLight School or Assumption Pathway School.
