Kindergarten Care and a full-day childcare place can solve different family schedules. Compare the actual child's day, travel and holiday cover before comparing monthly fees. A programme that fits school hours may still leave a pickup gap, and an all-day place may offer a different routine and transition.

What is the week you need to cover?

For an illustrative five-year-old, suppose one parent finishes work at 6 pm, a grandparent is available on Wednesdays and the child needs care on the other weekdays. This family is fictional. Draw a grid from drop-off to collection for term days and holidays. MOE's Kindergarten programme page and Kindergarten Care page explain those specific options. ECDA's choosing-a-preschool route helps parents search more broadly. Ask each actual provider for its hours, place availability and handoff procedure rather than assuming the programmes are interchangeable.

MOE's Kindergarten and Care fees page lists current categories and assistance information. For the fictional family, make separate lines for programme fee, care fee, meals, uniform or materials, deposit, holidays, late collection and transport. Our preschool-fees guide has a fuller first-year worksheet. Do not compare a published MOE fee with an invented private-provider price; request the actual written fee schedule and assess subsidies for your family's eligibility.

What should a visit or call reveal?

Ask how children move between learning and care, who checks attendance, how meals and rest are handled, how a parent is contacted after an incident and how a new child settles in. Ask whether the same pickup adults are authorised for both sessions. Our preschool-visit guide gives questions for observing the daily routine. A fictional Option A may fit term-time afternoons but have a holiday closure that leaves the family uncovered; Option B may offer full-day care across more days but require a longer commute. Put those gaps on the calendar before declaring one cheaper.

Check the actual application and withdrawal terms. Are places limited? When is the deposit due? How much notice is required to change care days? Ask how fees work for public holidays, school holidays and a child's absence. MOE's 2026 school calendar helps locate the long breaks, but each provider's operating calendar controls the care service. The student-care comparison becomes relevant later at Primary 1; it is a different service.

How do you make the decision?

Score each option on safe handoff, fit with work hours, child comfort, holiday cover, cost and travel. Do a trial journey at the actual time if possible. Ask the provider to confirm the schedule and total payable amount in writing. If a child needs additional support, describe the practical needs and ask what the centre can supply; do not assume a standard brochure answers that question. You can send BusyParents a care-schedule question for editorial guidance. We do not allocate places or promise a preschool referral.

Ask the child, at an age-appropriate level, what part of the day feels tiring or enjoyable during a trial. The adults may focus on work-hour coverage while the child experiences a long transition between settings. If the routine is not working, ask the educators which part can be adjusted before abandoning a place that otherwise fits.
